Course description:
This course is a dedicated space for women and gender-diverse individuals, with the focus of creating a welcoming environment for folks who have felt unwelcome in woodworking spaces.
This course will introduce students to the Lathe involving safety demonstrations, knowledge about chisels and other tools involved with turning, and how they are able to cut and shape wood. Students will be honing their skills week by week and gain confidence with using the lathe. Over the duration of this 6-week course, students will create a series of projects, such as candle holders, honey dippers, bud vases and more!
Location: Wood Studio
The Centre for Craft’s Wood Studio is located within our Studios Building at 1096 Marginal Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Building Description: Look for a grey building with blue trim. On the right hand side heading south, a few parking lots down from the back of the Westin hotel.
Weather-Related Closure Policy:
For weather-related closures, students will be notified of updates via email 3 hours in advance of the class start time.
If it is less than 3 hours before a class is scheduled to start, the students will be notified by email and over the phone.
Cancellation Policy:
Please review the above information and contact us as soon as possible if it is necessary to cancel or make changes.
- Cancellations with 7 or more business days notice can receive a full refund.
- Cancellations with 4-6 business days notice will only be issued a 75% refund.
- Cancellations with 1-3 business days before the first day of class will result in a 50% refund.
- No shows and cancellations less than 1 business day before will result in charges of the FULL class fee and are NOT eligible for any refund.

Jackie Toner
Jackie Toner, also known as Woods(wo)man Woodworking is an emerging woodworking and turning artist based in Windsor, NS. She is a self-directed artist who also holds BSc & MSc in Kinesiology and is currently a PhD Candidate in the field of Health & Safety. It was through her academia lifestyle that she leaned into working with her hands as a creative outlet and form of meditation. Through her work, Jackie aspires to showcase the natural beauty of woods from around the world while infusing modern design elements and techniques. Her current work focuses on unlocking alternative uses of the lathe and stepping outside of its traditional practices.
