Course description:
Providing an overview of the fundamental pottery making techniques, while also incorporating lessons on unconventional means of production; this class is built to cater to makers of all skill levels. Erin’s teaching is focused on giving students the skills that they need to realize their own designs. In their overview of pottery techniques, Erin shows the basics of HOW to make forms, while encouraging independent creativity and exploration. Each class evolves organically, based on the interests of the attendees. To help students create their own portfolio of skills to reach their creative goals; every semester presents a new set of demonstrations in throwing, sculpting, coil building, surface decorating, and glazing. No two classes are the same!
Location: Ceramics Studio
The Centre for Craft’s Ceramics Studio is located within our Studios Building at 1096 Marginal Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Building Description: Look for a grey building with blue trim. On the right hand side heading south, a few parking lots down from the back of the Westin hotel.
Weather-Related Closure Policy:
For weather-related closures, students will be notified of updates via email 3 hours in advance of the class start time.
If it is less than 3 hours before a class is scheduled to start, the students will be notified by email and over the phone.
Ceramic Projects Pick-Up Policy:
Students will be contacted after the last class of the course with various pick up times. This may take up to 3 weeks. All ceramic projects created in this course must be picked up during the set pick up times. If you can’t make it due to your schedule, get in touch with our studio coordinator.
Any unclaimed pieces that remain in the Ceramic Studio will be discarded.
Cancellation Policy:
Please review the above information and contact us as soon as possible if it is necessary to cancel or make changes.
- Cancellations with 7 or more business days notice can receive a full refund.
- Cancellations with 4-6 business days notice will only be issued a 75% refund.
- Cancellations with 1-3 business days before the first day of class will result in a 50% refund.
- No shows and cancellations less than 1 business day before will result in charges of the FULL class fee and are NOT eligible for any refund.

Erin Wells, BFA
Well versed in a myriad of pottery techniques, Erin is a fantastic resource for potters of all skill levels. Whether you are looking to throw larger and more complicated pieces, explore surface decoration, master coil or slab-building, troubleshoot mould making, venture into figure sculpting, or just make some gifts for your friends and family, this instructor is ready to help you dive-in and get your hands muddy.
Originally from Hershey, Pennsylvania, Erin started her studies at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) where she fell in love with clay under the tutelage of Robert Troxel. She created an exchange program with the world-renowned Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute and joined the university as their first western exchange student. She transferred to NSCAD University where she completed her BA in Fine Art: Ceramics, winning the first full Walter Ostrom Scholarship, before moving to Montreal to participate in numerous residencies while teaching workshops. She apprenticed under figurative sculptor Joel A Prevost for 2 years before moving back to Halifax where she currently works as the soul proprietor of Deep Harbour Pottery.
