Course description:
Learn and develop essential jewellery-making techniques and processes for working with metal. This course is designed for beginners who would like to gain fundamental skills like sawing, filing, sanding, drilling, texturing, soldering, sand casting and finishing. Students will work on three projects: rings, sandcasting pendants and making chains. Explore these techniques and use them to design and make your own unique pieces.
All basic tools and equipment you will need for this course are provided but you will need to provide your own metal if you wish to work in silver or on a large scale.
This course is ideal for beginners and those with some experience who would like to brush up on their skills.
What will the course cover?
- Using a jeweller’s saw to cut different shapes into metal sheets
- Measuring ring sizes
- Creating surface textures onto sheet metal
- Soldering and annealing
- Forming sheet metal and wire
- Sand casting
- Filing, sanding, finishing metal
- How to plan a project! Make your own earrings, pendant or brooch!
Location: Jewellery Studio
The Centre for Craft’s Jewellery Studio is located within our Studios Building at 1096 Marginal Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Building Description: Look for a grey building with blue trim. On the right hand side heading south, a few parking lots down from the back of the Westin hotel.
Weather-Related Closure Policy:
For weather-related closures, students will be notified of updates via email 3 hours in advance of the class start time.
If it is less than 3 hours before a class is scheduled to start, the students will be notified by email and over the phone.
Cancellation Policy:
Please review the above information and contact us as soon as possible if it is necessary to cancel or make changes.
- Cancellations with 7 or more business days notice can receive a full refund.
- Cancellations with 4-6 business days notice will only be issued a 75% refund.
- Cancellations with 1-3 business days before the first day of class will result in a 50% refund.
- No shows and cancellations less than 1 business day before will result in charges of the FULL class fee and are NOT eligible for any refund.

Instructor:

Wenjing Yan
Wenjing Yan graduated in 2020 from Nova Scotia College of Arts and Design (NSCAD) University in Halifax with a BFA major in Jewellery Design and Metalsmithing. During her studies, she did an exchange in Germany at Pforzheim Hochschule. She also has BFA degree in Animation Design in China.
She has participated in many exhibitions. Among those exhibitions are the Solo “WE”Exhibition; Alchemy5 of 13th Enamelling Exhibition; the 19th International Silver Triennial Exhibition; New Taipei City International Metal Craft Exhibition; Annual SNAG Student Slide Exhibition; and the VMAA Vancouver Metal Arts Association [Play]ground Exhibition.
She loves to experiment with new materials and methods to create and develop her jewellery designs.
