Course description:
No experience necessary! Rug hooking is easy and fun. There are just a few rules…and then you can break them! Rug hooking is a traditional craft in NS. It started with recycled clothing and the backing was burlap from old potato sacks. It has developed into an art form using all kinds of materials and subject matter. (Anything from wool to sari silk. In this course, you will learn the basics of rug hooking, make your own pattern and transfer it to the backing, and then you’ll create your own beautiful 9×11 inch mat.
Location: Multipurpose Studio
The Centre for Craft’s Multipurpose Studio is located in the same building as the Mary E. Black Gallery at 1061 Marginal Road, Suite #140, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Additional location Description: We are located in the Halifax Seaport between Pier 21 and the NEW Farmer’s Market. There is a train car in front of our main entrance.
Weather-Related Closure Policy:
For weather-related closures, students will be notified of updates via email 3 hours in advance of the class start time.
If it is less than 3 hours before a class is scheduled to start, the students will be notified by email and over the phone.
Cancellation Policy:
Please review the above information and contact us as soon as possible if it is necessary to cancel or make changes.
- Cancellations with 7 or more business days notice can receive a full refund.
- Cancellations with 4-6 business days notice will only be issued a 75% refund.
- Cancellations with 1-3 business days before the first day of class will result in a 50% refund.
- No shows and cancellations less than 1 business day before will result in charges of the FULL class fee and are NOT eligible for any refund.

Lena Turofsky
Lena Turofsky has been a passionate rug hooker for 25 years. She was first introduced to it at Craft Nova Scotia and was immediately hooked! Her love for rug hooking led her to other fiber arts, weaving most recently, and took up drawing to improve her rug-hooking designing skills. Lena’s love, excitement, and knowledge of rug hooking, combined with her passion and love for teaching has led her to introduce and teach rug hooking privately for many years.
