Course description:
Dolls have been with humankind since prehistoric times giving us mystery, magic, play and power. This doll-making workshop will explore the creation of contemporary art dolls, paper dolls, and poppets using materials such as fabric, wood, beeswax, and plaster. Through personal narrative students will explore storytelling by creating dolls infused with energy and connection to the stories of their lives.
No prior knowledge or experience is necessary although you should be able to handle a needle and thread.
Location: Multipurpose Studio
The Centre for Craft’s Multipurpose Studio is located in the same building as the Mary E. Black Gallery at 1061 Marginal Road, Suite #140, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Additional location Description: We are located in the Halifax Seaport between Pier 21 and the NEW Farmer’s Market. There is a train car in front of our main entrance.
Weather-Related Closure Policy:
For weather-related closures, students will be notified of updates via email 3 hours in advance of the class start time.
If it is less than 3 hours before a class is scheduled to start, the students will be notified by email and over the phone.
Cancellation Policy:
Please review the above information and contact us as soon as possible if it is necessary to cancel or make changes.
- Cancellations with 7 or more business days notice can receive a full refund.
- Cancellations with 4-6 business days notice will only be issued a 75% refund.
- Cancellations with 1-3 business days before the first day of class will result in a 50% refund.
- No shows and cancellations less than 1 business day before will result in charges of the FULL class fee and are NOT eligible for any refund.

Ken Flett
I am a Nova Scotia based visual artist and l have generally worked with black and white photographs incorporating them with various objects.
In the last few years l have mainly concentrated on mixed media without the black and white photos using stitching, embroidery, mosaic, and other hand done work that requires time and patience.
I work with themes of love and memory, hope and loss. I am interested in making the invisible visible, not just as art, but by giving importance to stories that would otherwise be lost and forgotten.
I also have worked with cloth dolls for many years, incorporating them into stop motion and other photographic work. I have taught many workshops and summer schools on pinhole cameras, stop motion, doll making, mixed media, and assemblage. I enjoy teaching.

Ken Flett can best be described as a bricoleur. A “bricoleur” is a kind of handyman who enjoys adroitly drawing upon all sorts of everyday things – whatever is at hand – to attend to those things that make the good life.
