Course description:
During this two-day workshop, students will make their own hardcover book using traditional bookbinding techniques. Students will learn a versatile case binding technique that can be used for making hardcover journals, guestbooks, small editions, etc. We will also explore techniques for adding recessed or raised shapes on the front cover.
Materials include: of papers, PVA glue, linen thread, linen tapes, book board and mill board, book cloth, endbands, mull, rice paste
Location: Multipurpose Studio
The Centre for Craft’s Multipurpose Studio is located in the same building as the Mary E. Black Gallery at 1061 Marginal Road, Suite #140, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Additional location Description: We are located in the Halifax Seaport between Pier 21 and the NEW Farmer’s Market. There is a train car in front of our main entrance.
Weather-Related Closure Policy:
For weather-related closures, students will be notified of updates via email 3 hours in advance of the class start time.
If it is less than 3 hours before a class is scheduled to start, the students will be notified by email and over the phone.
Cancellation Policy:
Please review the above information and contact us as soon as possible if it is necessary to cancel or make changes.
- Cancellations with 7 or more business days notice can receive a full refund.
- Cancellations with 4-6 business days notice will only be issued a 75% refund.
- Cancellations with 1-3 business days before the first day of class will result in a 50% refund.
- No shows and cancellations less than 1 business day before will result in charges of the FULL class fee and are NOT eligible for any refund.

Instructor:

Rhonda Miller, BA, MLIS
Rhonda Miller is a bookbinder with nearly twenty years experience and she has an undying fascination with book structure and historical bookbinding techniques. As a book artist, she does custom bookbinding, book repair and restoration, artists books, and paper marbling. Her work has been included in book art exhibits in various locations and in 2018 she won the Heritage Washi Award for her book in the CBBAG Art of the Book Exhibition. She has contributed to a number of bookbinding publications and has been interviewed for the Bookbinding Now podcast series.
While earning her Masters of Library and Information Studies, she took bookbinding courses through the Dawson Printshop at Dalhousie University. Later, she continued to develop her skills through a variety of workshops and intensive learning events such as the Paper and Book Intensive. Rhonda is owner and operator of MyHandboundBooks and Scotia Bookbinding and she teaches bookbinding classes at Craft Nova Scotia and at The Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, Ohio. MyHandboundBooks.com
